Tudoriferous

It's time to shift our perspective. For so many previous episodes, the Ottomans have been a lurking threat, a subject of many, many failed attempts at crusades, and a constant reminder that Christendom was completely incapable of getting their act together. So why didn't the Ottoman Sultan, Bayezid II, take advantage of Western European disunity and triumphantly conquer the Christian kingdoms?

I mean, he'd like to, I'm sure. He just has to deal with these other borders first. And his family. And the religious establishment. And the popular preachers. And the soldiers. And his family, again. This is all starting to sound very familiar...

Alexander is more and more under Cesare's thumb.  Is his son making him do things that a pope should never even consider or is that Pope Julius stirring?  Whichever it is, Cesare's very expensive hobby is emptying the papal treasury.

Last time we did Alexander he wasn't Tudorlicious.  Will that all change this time around?

In this episode, after many promises, we actually meet Savonarola.  Despite much provocation, Alexander's reaction to him is really quite surprising.

Charles VIII invades Italy.....again.  What will Alexander do?  Stand up to him with the full weight of the Church behind him?  Or will he cower in a fortress like a gibbering wreck?

Our first attempt at  Alexander wasn't as in depth as we would now do, so I wanted to give him another go.

How did this man, whom many would have said was utterly unsuited to the religious life at all, become pope - apart from the obvious?

Why must Russian rulers be so ruthless? What makes 19th century Russian novels so rich and fascinating? And what exactly is the difference between a bow and an affectionate bow? Find out all this and more...

Unbelievably today is our fifth anniversary.

Five years, two hundred and six episodes on the main feed, seventy four on Patreon.

Thank you all so much for listening to us drone on about these people for all this time.

The second in a two-part series on Maximilian's wives.

This is the unloved one.  Mind you, very big dowry!

(Apologies for the noises off.  While we were recording there was a drive past of about fifty vintage tractors!)
